POKOTABI / Suzukiya
鈴木家
At traditional sweet shop Suzukiya in Nakagawa, Adachi Ward, the counter features a broad lineup of wagashi, from lightly sweetened mame daifuku to seasonal lemon and plum daifuku, chewy dango, and dorayaki.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Set in a quiet residential corner of Nakagawa in Adachi Ward, the storefront displays of wagashi specialist Suzukiya immediately draw the eye with classic mochi sweets like mame daifuku and skewered dango. The mame daifuku, one of the signature offerings, pairs a firm, satisfyingly chewy mochi skin studded with ample black soybeans around a red bean paste crafted with restrained sweetness. Alongside soft, pliable dango skewers and ohagi rice balls with a clean, gentle sweetness, these traditional treats offer the straightforward, rustic comfort suited to everyday snacking.
Browsing the glass showcase reveals creative seasonal daifuku resting right alongside the traditional staples. The rotation features variations such as lemon daifuku, blending citrus peel and pulp into smooth white bean paste for a bright, refreshing profile, and ume daifuku, encasing seeded plum flesh in aromatic red shiso and sweet bean paste. Depending on the time of year, strawberry and chestnut daifuku also make an appearance, pairing seasonal fruit flavours with sweet bean paste to provide something new with each visit.
The assortment extends well beyond daifuku and dango. Shelves are stocked with multiple varieties of dorayaki pancake sandwiches—including a cheese-filled version—as well as baked confections, chilled mizu-yokan, savory steamed okowa rice, and filled oyaki dumplings. Opening from 8:00 in the morning, the neighborhood shop makes an easy stop during a morning walk to pick up afternoon tea accompaniments for home or a casual gift.
